welcome aboard

Ships of Hagoth is a digital-first literary magazine featuring creative nonfiction and theoretical essays by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Where other LDS-centric publications often look inward at the LDS tradition, we seek literary works that look outward through the curious, charitable lens of faith.

Because in the end, the only rating that matters is the one you feel when the lights come back on. What is the most "unfair" Tamil movie rating you have seen on IMDb? Let us know in the comments below!

A Tamil film with brilliant dialogue by Viji or Crazy Mohan often loses its magic in subtitles. Consequently, a comedy classic like Sathi Leelavathi (7.8) might be rated lower than a mediocre action flick with no language barrier.

If you are a Tamil movie fan in the digital age, you have been here before. A new film releases on a Thursday night or Friday morning. Within hours, the social media chatter begins. But before the popcorn gets cold, a different kind of verdict starts trickling in: the IMDb rating .

From the majestic Kalki 2898 AD (technically bilingual) to the raw emotional power of Maharaja , the IMDb score has become the unofficial report card for Kollywood. But how much should we really trust those decimal points? Is a 9.2-star fan-rated film actually better than a classic with an 8.5?

So the next time you see a "9.5" for a new release, take a deep breath. Make some popcorn. Watch the film. And decide for yourself.

IMDb is not a truth machine. It is a . For Tamil cinema, it measures the heat of the audience’s passion, not just the quality of the craft. Nayagan remains an 8.6, not because it is flawed, but because its voters are honest humans, not bots.

We are hoping—for “one must needs hope”—for creative nonfiction, theoretical essays, and craft essays that seek radical new ways to explore and express theological ideas; that are, like Hagoth, “exceedingly curious.”

We favor creative nonfiction that can trace its lineage back to Michel de Montaigne. Whether narrative, analytical, or devotional, these essays lean ruminative, conversational, meandering, impressionistic, and are reluctant to wax didactic.

As for theoretical essays: we welcome work that playfully and charitably explores the wide world of arts & letters—especially works created from differing religious, non-religious, and even irreligious perspectives—through the peculiar lens of a Latter-day Saint.

We read and publish submissions as quickly as possible, and accept simultaneous submissions.
