When Alby is stung by a Griever and left dying in the Maze, Thomas breaks the first rule: he runs into the Maze at night to save him. With the help of his best friend, Chuck, and the reluctant Keeper of the Runners, Minho, Thomas survives. They discover a dead Griever—and inside its mechanical guts, a code: a number pattern that maps the Maze’s movement.
They solve the Maze. A door opens, revealing a dark corridor leading to an elevator. But their escape is a trap. Scientists in white coats sedate them. Thomas wakes up in a white room with a woman on a screen: Dr. Ava Paige. She explains: The world outside is dead. A solar flare scorched the Earth, and a virus called the Flare turned most of humanity into violent, brain-dead creatures called Cranks. Thomas is different. He’s restless, curious, and brave to a fault. After his arrival, the next day’s box brings the first girl ever: Teresa. She carries a cryptic note: “She’s the last one. In the chaos, Teresa stays behind to upload the cure data to a hidden server, sacrificing herself. Thomas and the others escape into a lush valley—a safe zone for Immunes, untouched by the Flare. As the sun rises over green hills, Thomas looks back at the ruins of the city. He holds a locket Chuck gave him. Inside is a photo of the Glade.
They break into WCKD’s mountain headquarters, The Last City. Inside, they find Teresa, now a reluctant WCKD scientist, extracting memories and spinal fluid from Immunes, killing them in the process. Newt’s condition worsens. He begs Thomas to kill him before he turns into a Crank. Thomas refuses. In the final battle, Newt loses control. He attacks Thomas, who is forced to stab his best friend to save himself. Newt’s last words: “Take care of them for me.”
