Pip nodded— preep .
Then he took a breath and quacked a long, wobbly, impossible sentence: "The water is cold—preep—the sky is sweet—preep—and I’m not broken—preep—I’m just in two notes—preep—like a song that’s learning to sing itself." quack preep
"I’m Pip," he said, "and sometimes I go preep ." Pip nodded— preep
From a hollow log came a tiny, rhythmic sound: Tick. Tick. Tock. "You’ve just got a preep
A slow, old turtle surfaced nearby. "Nothing’s wrong," said the turtle, whose name was Tethys. "You’ve just got a preep . It’s the sound of a thought that doesn’t fit a quack."
Once upon a time, in a swampy corner of Clatterbrook Bog, there lived a young duck named Pip. Pip was not a remarkable duck. He paddled in the usual circles, dabbled for the usual weeds, and muttered the usual quack .
Then one small duckling—the one who’d laughed loudest—opened her beak and said softly: "Quack… ding."
