This paper investigates two central questions: (1) Why did OkJatt become a primary source for Punjabi movie consumption? (2) What are the measurable and qualitative impacts of OkJatt on Pollywood’s production ecosystem? By synthesizing industry reports, legal documents, and audience behavior studies, this paper provides a comprehensive analysis of OkJatt as both a symptom and a cause of structural weaknesses in regional media distribution. Between 2015 and 2020, Punjabi cinema saw a 300% increase in production output, with films like Carry on Jatta 2 and Chal Mera Putt grossing over ₹50 crore worldwide (Punjab Film Chamber, 2022). The diaspora—particularly in Canada, the UK, and Australia—became a key market. However, legitimate digital access remained fragmented. While platforms like Amazon Prime and Chaupal later expanded their Punjabi catalogs, many films initially had delayed international releases or required expensive cable subscriptions (Dhillon, 2020).

The proliferation of online piracy platforms has significantly disrupted regional film industries worldwide. This paper examines “OkJatt,” a notorious pirate website specializing in Punjabi-language movies. Through a case study approach, it explores OkJatt’s operational methods, its appeal to audiences in the Punjabi diaspora, and the consequent economic and creative damage to the Pollywood (Punjabi film) industry. The paper argues that while OkJatt capitalized on gaps in legitimate distribution and regional content accessibility, its piracy model ultimately undermines the long-term sustainability of Punjabi cinema. It concludes by discussing anti-piracy measures, legal interventions, and the need for affordable, accessible legal alternatives. (2) What are the measurable and qualitative impacts
