Soren smiled. “Then it’s also the cure. And I intend to weaponize the cure.”

“It doesn’t want to be opened,” Lara said, extending her hand. “Give it to me. I’ll seal it again.”

The chopper dropped them on a razorback ridge. Below, the ruins of a Minoan temple sprawled into a labyrinth of limestone and shadow. Lara moved first, dual pistols holstered but unclipped. Her fingers brushed the wall carvings: figures offering a jar to a woman with serpent arms—Echidna, mother of monsters.

Lara caught the box inches above the lava. The heat was apocalyptic. The ichor touched her gloves—and vanished. The box sealed itself, smooth and silent. Lara felt a cold whisper in her mind: You held death. You gave it back.

Deep in the earth, the chamber began to collapse. Lara left Kessler at the tunnel mouth and went back.

“The Box of Chaos,” Kessler whispered. “According to the scroll, it cannot be opened by force. Only by sacrifice.”

“Mister Kessler, Miss Croft,” Dorian said, brushing debris from his jacket. “The box, if you please. Dr. Soren has a theory that the ‘breath of souls’ might be a concentrated biogenic agent. Immortality in a jar.”

On the beach, under a blood-red dawn, Kessler watched her set the box into a lead-lined container. “What now?”
