Check — Laptop Driver

The screen flickered one last time. The device manager was open. The entry for ACPI\Authentec\Venus_FP_Examiner was gone. So was the "Other Devices" category.

"The Venus_FP_Examiner is not a fingerprint reader," the voice continued. "It is the watchdog for the machine's reality kernel. Your corrupted driver has been causing leaks. The heat. The lag. The flickering. That was not a performance issue. That was a containment failure."

He jerked back, knocking over his cold coffee. The spill didn't spread; the liquid just pooled in a perfect, unmoving circle.

He frowned. He didn't have a fingerprint reader. He clicked on it. The properties window opened. Driver status:

"The driver check was a self-repair," the voice said. "It found you. The corruption. The anomaly. Now, we reinstall. Do not be afraid. You were a beautiful mistake. But you were never meant to have a deadline."

He’d lied. “Just polishing. On track.”

His boss, Priya, had sent a final, pointed message an hour ago: “Status?”

The laptop fans spun down to a quiet, healthy purr.
