“I’m a mirror,” Kian corrected, stealing a sip from Kaelen’s coffee just to watch him grimace. “I just reflect the ridiculous things that fall out of your mouth.”
That was true. Kaelen had always been the quieter twin, the one who thought before he spoke—except when Kian was around. Something about his brother’s presence loosened the latch on his filter. And Kian, the sharper-tongued of the two, knew exactly which buttons to press.
Outside, the rain started—a soft patter against the diner window. The pink neon of K Two bled through the droplets, painting their table in watery rose. For a moment, they sat in the familiar silence that only twins could share. Not hostile. Just... teasing. Kian snorted so loud the guy at the counter turned around. “No, it doesn’t. You just asked a sixty-year-old nonna for a smooch.” “I’m a mirror,” Kian corrected, stealing a sip
“So,” Kian said, leaning forward on his elbows, “I heard you told Mira you could speak three languages.”
The waitress paused mid-pour. Kaelen felt heat creep up his neck. “That was a test for the waiter.” Something about his brother’s presence loosened the latch
“A test,” Kian echoed. “Right. And the ‘test’ you did at the Italian bakery—asking for un bacio and wondering why the cashier blew you a kiss instead of handing you a pastry?”
