How To Import: Google Map To Autocad

Export as KML/KMZ. Instead of a screenshot, go to File > Export > Save Place As… and save your selected area as a .KMZ file. This file contains not just the image but the geographic corner coordinates.

Insert the Image into AutoCAD. Use the ATTACH command (or IMAGEATTACH ) in AutoCAD. Select your screenshot file. how to import google map to autocad

Set the Coordinate System. In Google Earth Pro, ensure your view is set to "Map" (not Satellite) for cleaner linework, or use Satellite for imagery. Go to File > Save > Save Image . In the save dialog, check the box for "Scale Legend" and, crucially, ensure "Grid" (Lat/Long) is visible. Export as KML/KMZ

Scale the Image. This is the critical step. In Google Earth, measure a known distance on the screen (e.g., the length of a visible sidewalk or the distance between two intersections). In AutoCAD, use the SCALE command, select the image, type R for "Reference," click two points on the image that correspond to the known distance, and then type that actual distance (e.g., 100’). The image will now be roughly to scale. Insert the Image into AutoCAD

The image will not be geographically accurate at all points due to distortion, but it works for massing studies. Method 2: The Professional Workflow (For Site Plans & Permits) For accurate base maps that can be used for grading, utility planning, or permit sets, you must use Google Earth Pro (free) and a CAD tool that handles geolocation.

Capture the Map. Open Google Maps or Google Earth Pro (preferred, as it allows higher resolution exports). Navigate to your site and adjust the zoom level. Use the "Save Image" function in Google Earth Pro or a dedicated screenshot tool (like Snipping Tool on Windows).
