She scrolled further down the search results. A Reddit thread caught her eye: “Unblocked my ex after 6 months. Regret it instantly. Some doors are closed for a reason.”
Sarah thought about the voicemail she’d never deleted. The one where his voice cracked. The one she’d listened to thirty-seven times (yes, she’d counted) before finally muting her phone just to make it stop.
She hadn’t typed it. Her thumb had hovered over the keyboard, but the words just appeared, pulled from some algorithm that knew her better than she knew herself. Or maybe from the three glasses of wine she’d had after the dinner she couldn’t finish.
There he was. Leo. And below him, a handful of others: the ex-coworker who’d sent unsolicited LinkedIn messages at 2 a.m., the spam bot that kept trying to sell her keto gummies, her aunt’s old boyfriend who’d commented “you’ve filled out nicely” on her beach photo.
She turned off the light. The phone went dark.
And then she did something that surprised her.
