Oh, XviD. Born from the ashes of the proprietary DivX ; open-source, aggressive, and engineered for one purpose — cramming a 2‑hour movie into 700 MB or 1.4 GB without making it look like a watercolor painting of a glitch. XviD was a master of psychovisual tricks: throwing away detail you wouldn’t notice, smoothing gradients, sharpening edges just enough to fool the eye.
